Anthony Coates Named as New Brewer Head Football Coach

Anthony Coates has been named as Head Football Coach at Brewer Middle School. Coates has served as an Assistant Varsity Football Coach at Greenwood High School for the last 13 years.


Coates attended schools in Greenwood District 50 and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1984. During his time at Greenwood High School, Coates was a standout athlete in football and basketball and was recognized as an all region player in baseball. He began his coaching career in 2005 at Emerald High School as an assistant coach and worked under Head Mike Clowney for three years Coates has coached a variety of offensive and defensive position groups at the high school level. 


Coach Coates has been married for 30 years to Vonda M. Coates and they have three children and three grandchildren. He is also a  member of the Young’s Chapel Baptist Church where he serves as Chairman of Trustee Board and is a member of the Inspirational Choir. 


Coates stated, “It is an honor to coach a football program with such a rich history and tradition. It is a privilege to be able to shape the lives of the young men who will lead our school and community in the future. Brewer holds a special place in my heart and I look forward to continuing Brewer’s tradition of excellence in football.”

Brewer Principal Rico Salliewhite stated, “Coach Coates brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our football program.  It was evident that he cares about our children and community and is very interested in maintaining a high level of competition on the football field. We welcome Coach Coates back to the Brewer family.”
