Brewer Middle School is helping all students develop the World Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by emphasizing the use of critical thinking and creativity. Being able to think critically and creatively is essential to success in college and the workplace. Every lesson taught at Brewer Middle school incorporates these skills.
Project-Based Learning
Our school places an emphasis on Project-based Learning. All teachers are expected to incorporate Project-Based Learning into their curriculums. PBL is an excellent method for challenging students to think critically and to be creative in their solutions. We have an instructional coach who leads Project-based Learning professional development for our teachers. Our teachers also have access to formal PBL training through a university in our region.
ACTS
Brewer Middle School has an in-house magnet school. Creativity and critical thinking are integral parts of an arts-rich environment. Music, art, dance, drama and band are staples across the entire school. Over the past year, we have introduced voice, visual arts, photography, dance orchestra and guitar to our non-magnet students. We received a DAP grant which we are using to further enhance this process.
High Expectations
In addition to PBL and the arts, teachers in all core and related arts classes are expected to challenge their students with lessons and activities that use critical thinking and creativity every day. Teachers use a variety of techniques to achieve this goal. These techniques include, but are not limited to, Flipped Classrooms, Responsive Classroom, creative grouping, across the curriculum units, and a wide variety of technology-based learning.
Professional Development
We have instructional coaches in math, English Language Arts, science, and technology who actively assist all of our teachers in the creation and execution of lessons that require critical thinking and creativity. Our teachers also have access to a plethora of professional development. These opportunities include the South Carolina Association of Middle-Level Education conference, the Making Middle Grades Work Conference, the South Carolina EDTech conference, and a number of local professional development choices throughout the school year.
The impact of thinking critically and creatively is evident at Brewer Middle School. Our 7th and 8th grade students have shown growth in English Language Arts, math, and science on their NWEA MAP scores throughout the school year. The number of discipline incidents has also continued to drop across all three grade levels. The emphasis on critical thinking and creativity is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
